Remembering September 11th

An unexpected and tragic day,
America stood still, in utter dismay.
Some were sipping coffee or tea,
Or chatting away with their friend or employee.
Others folded laundry, watching the screen,
Or having a meeting about to convene.
Countless were driving peacefully about,
While many were eating their breakfast out.
Suddenly we heard the radio or television-
“America under attack-what a horrific collision!”
Myriads heard of the terrorists’ acts,
Immediately, and in shock, trying to get all the facts.
Never forgetting that moment our mouths dropped,
When we heard the news, our busy lives quickly stopped.
Instantly we called our precious loved ones,
But some were never reached, leaving them stunned,
Later to find out they were on the hijacked plane
Or at the Twin Towers for a brief meeting in vain.
Speechless and full of terror and instant fear,
We were glued to the news in panic and tears.
Few were blessed with a final call,
A farewell before the towers would fall!
Others never heard a last good-bye,
Just like they vanished in the sky.
They found it hard to accept in their minds,
So many bodies they never would find.
They rushed to the piles of rubble and stared,
In hopes to find a memory spared.
But what these grieving loved ones found
Were memorials from the world all over the grounds.
We stared in disbelief and grief at the TV
As helpless people would frantically flee
Out of the New York Twin Towers like flies,
Until buildings crumbled before our eyes!
But in the final, tragic hour,
Heroes emerged all over with power.
The burning structures were about to collapse,
The helpless trying to escape, caught in traps.
But the fearless emerged dragging the terrified out
Through all the chaos, screaming, and shouts;
The courageous carrying the wounded down stairs,
Filled with thick smoke, with only a glare.
Some gave their lives so others would be saved,
Like the heroes and daring bravely behaved.
The bold and unafraid headed off their plane
Into a field, sparing the White House domain!
Standing up to the terrorists, the valiant performed
And gave up their lives, while keeping America informed!
Americans heard the Pentagon was hit;
Another plane crashed, the terrorists, the culprit.
Thousands of Americans would die that day
In such a terrible and gruesome way.
Families and friends and coworkers in grief,
As they heard of them dying in disbelief.
People just like me and you
Went to work that day with no clue,
Not knowing what the day would hold,
That the enormous, rising Twin Towers would collapse and fold!
Firefighters and policemen from everywhere
Rushed to help with considerable care,
Working long days and all through the night,
Digging through rubble to recover bodies on site;
Cleaning up the unimaginable,disastrous scene
With every available, massive machine;
Now a memorial sits in its place,
Ground Zero, honoring the towers’ space,
Americans came together right from the start,
Showing more care and opened their hearts.
Those who supported our troops who fought
In pursuit of the enemy who was behind wicked plots,
Were overjoyed that a leader of the hijackings would pay.
Our troops brought freedom to a land in disarray.
Years passed, and Americans became complacent,
Forgetting that day that took thousands of the innocent.
But if we dig deep down, thinking back to that ordeal,
We feel the fear and loss, so vivid and real,
That deeply gripped our hearts and souls.
Never forgetting God is in control!
We cannot understand His infinite plan,
For He is perfect and we are mere man.
What mercy He showed-still the Land of the Free,
Home of the Brave, proved through all that debris.
The USA must fight back and persevere,
Perils forcing us on our knees in prayer;
To plead with God to save this land
As part of His Sovereign, Omnipotent Plan.
America must respond, causing evil to fail
With the help of our God, bringing peace to prevail!
Many who fought back are now in heaven,
Used by God on September eleven.
America’s heroes will long be remembered,
The day they fought back, the eleventh of September!
